Object Name |
Standard Sewing Machine |
Scope & Content |
Standard Sewing Machine c. 1904 This sewing machine was originally owned by Mary Pleasant Howser Hope (1885-1918) of Lucketts. Mary was a mother of six when she passed away in 1918, after which the sewing machine stayed in the family. Domestic sewing machines were vital for all manner of clothing and home goods, such as shirts, dresses, curtains, quilt piecing, and more. Though initially expensive, sewing machines enabled thrifty farm wives to keep their families and homes looking neat. Lillian Hope Stowers (1911-2007) sowed on her late mother's machine, probably in the late 1920's or early 30's. |
